The refurbishment of this iconic bar/restaurant on the corner of Courtenay Place and Blair Street was a full makeover to change not only the name, but also the image. The building is of brick construction and dates from 1905. A degree of strengthening had already been carried out on the building so we needed to make sure this was not affected in the renovation. We were required to infill the existing first floor stair well and the ground floor over the cellar below. The challenge was to get the material into the building and lifted into place. They also had to have minimum impact in their final position. A new stair was constructed from 56mm marine grade plywood. The plywood balustrade formed the only structural support and gives the impression it is floating. All fixings and support structure are concealed.
