The rebuild of Thorndon School was completed in June 2019. The refurbishment consisted of a new administration block, the eastern classroom block (Te Pihinga) and the main classroom block. It also included the seismic strengthening of the existing White House structure (staff-room and library).

The purpose of the rebuild was to provide new innovative learning environments, with larger and more flexible learning spaces to encourage collaborative leaning and other modern education methods.

The buildings are a mix of single and two stories with the structural system of the Main Block consisting of steel portal frames, braced frames and masonry walls with a suspended concrete slab. The Admin Block and Te Pihinga are a combination of masonry, steel and timber framing. The existing White House is a reinforced concrete structure strengthened with structural steel.

The school remained operational throughout the entire construction process.
