Overview
The Higgins Concrete Headquarters and Workshop in Manawatū, New Zealand, is an award-winning project that showcases innovation, sustainability, and the versatility of concrete as both a structural and architectural material. Completed in late 2021, the development comprises two distinct buildings: the headquarters, which serves as the central office and meeting space for Higgins, and a separate workshop designed for practical functionality. The headquarters was designed to highlight concrete’s aesthetic and functional potential, featuring striking pre-cast concrete elements, Glulam timber frames in the office area, and a distinctive Shark Tooth roof. Recognized with a Gold Award at the 2024 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, the headquarters also achieved a 4-star Green Star rating, making it the first commercial building in the Manawatū region to attain this level of sustainability.
The workshop, while separate from the headquarters, was designed with a focus on practicality and efficiency, incorporating a large gantry for concrete truck maintenance and repairs. Both buildings feature pre-cast concrete elements, reflecting Higgins’ commitment to showcasing concrete as a versatile and durable material. The project was delivered through close collaboration between architects, contractors, and the client.
